Ex US General indicts ISI for terrorism, demands snapping US-Pak ties

Washington, July 1 : Ex US army General Jack Keane has indicted Pak’s premier inteligence agency  ISI saying “it not only ‘aids and abets’ terror sanctuaries in the country, but also provides training, resources and intelligence to extremist outfits.” The curt statement came at the exact time when the Indian delegation led by senior most minister Pranav Mukharjee is in USA, negotiating about terrorism & afganisthan.

General Keane reportedly said, "The truth is, the ISI aids and abets the sanctuaries in Pakistan that the Afghan operate out of. They provide training for them, they provide resources for them and they provide intelligence for them. From those sanctuaries, every single day Afghan fighters come into Afghanistan and kill and maim us,"

"There's a direct relationship of ISI's complicity and the deaths of  American soldiers and the catastrophic wounding of those soldiers," General Keane said at a discussion on counterinsurgency, transition and drawdown in Afghanistan, organized by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in Washington.

"This is radical Islam who wants to take over that country would have that nuclear arsenal. None of that could we permit to have happen," he said, adding that the US-Pakistan strategic partnership should "be grounded, once and for all, on the truth"

"This partnership has got to be based on that harsh reality. There are two ammonium nitrate factories in Pakistan. 80 per cent of the explosive devices that are used to kill our soldiers, kill Afghan security forces and kill Afghan people come from Pakistan," he pointed out.

General Keane also accused Pakistan of "lying" when confronted by the US on this matter, and stressed that truth must be the basis for US-Pakistan ties.

Kaene told the audience further, "All of what I just said to you, when we confront them with this, they lie to us. They lie to us just like the Soviet Union used to lie to us. But we have to have a relationship, in my judgment, that is based on the harsh reality and the truth and we go from there in developing this relationship."

It is noteworthy that the high level Indian delegation is currently visiting US, led by senior most minister Mukharjee. The government of India has officially stated that the negotiations are regarding the bilateral trade.

It is to be watched how the official positions change or presented & what the long term outcomes of the situation be.

against Maoist Terrorism

Raipur : People in Naxal-affected Bastar region of Chhattisgarh are happy over arrival of Army personnel for training, a top officer said today.

An Army contingent arrived in Bastar, a Maoist stronghold, a few weeks ago for jungle warfare training.

People are generally happy over the arrival of Army personnel for training and they have welcomed them, Lt Gen V K Ahluwalia, General Officer Commanding, Central Command, told reporters here.

Ahluwalia said he has toured the area and realised that the locals have love, and not fear, for the Army.

The Army will soon start welfare activities for the local residents. They will, among other things, undertake cleaning of lakes and help in education of children, he said.

To a question, Ahluwalia said it has already been clarified that Army has entered into the Maoist territory only for "jungle warfare training and not for anti-Naxal operation".
